Michelle Hure, MD, MS

Dr. Michelle Hure is a California native, having been born and raised into a farming family in the Central Valley. She’s lived all over the country and has finally settled in the idyllic town of San Juan Capistrano. Dr. Hure attended the University of California, Davis for undergraduate and graduate school, while working as a lecturer, anatomy instructor and medic on the ambulance. While at UC Davis, she conducted novel research under a grant from the US Navy, which resulted in discovering a new Herpes virus responsible for causing a type of devastating cancer in California Sea Lions. She transferred her enthusiasm to her medical school studies, where she helped to establish a charity health clinic, was hired to help teach gross anatomy to her fellow medical students and served multiple other leadership roles, while still graduating with highest honors. Dr. Hure went on to complete her Internal Medicine internship at Yale-New Haven-affiliated Saint Mary’s Hospital. She completed her residency, serving as Chief Resident her final year, at the University of Massachusetts. She stayed at UMass and graduated, with formal recognition by the faculty for her outstanding performance, from Dermatopathology fellowship before moving back to California.

Dr. Hure is one of very few physicians in the region to be double board certified by both the American Board of Dermatology and the American Board of Pathology in both Dermatopathology and Anatomic Pathology. She has also been the only dermatopathologist in all of Orange County to be recognized as a “Physician of Excellence” by her physician peers and the Orange County Medical Association, multiple years over.  A Dermatopathologist receives comprehensive training in both dermatology and pathology of the skin.

Dr. Hure has authored peer-reviewed articles, a book chapter and presented her research at the meetings of the American Society of Dermatopathology, the United States and Canadian Academy of Pathology and International Association for Aquatic Animal Medicine. She routinely serves as faculty for national dermatology conferences, is Assistant Clinical Professor at UC Irvine, and served as the Director of Pathology for the largest dermatology group on the west coast.

During the height of the pandemic, she volunteered her weekends to work with charity health organizations, such as Share Ourselves, to vaccinate the most vulnerable populations in Orange County. Her tireless efforts to educate the community regarding the pandemic also led to formal recognition as “Business Leader of the Year” by the mayor of San Juan Capistrano. When not taking care of patients, running the daily operations of the practice, combating health misinformation on social media and other media outlets, providing free skin cancer screenings to first responders or being a mom, Dr. Hure routinely mentors premedical & medical students, residents and fellows as they navigate through medical training. She also advocates for her physician peers to stay independent by refusing the private equity takeover of private practices and medicine in general.

Dr. Hure is also a member of the following organizations:

Another behind the scenes- Prior Authorization edi Another behind the scenes- Prior Authorization edition.

Insurance companies have no interest in supporting preventative medicine. In order to treat precancerous lesions (PREVENTING them from turning into skin cancer), I want to use a generic cream that is from 1991. But most insurance plans don't want to approve it. Insurance wants me to use formulations that aren't appropriate to use or other meds that are not supported in the medical literature to be of any use.

Literally, any licensed medical professional would Literally, any licensed medical professional would be a better fit at this point.

The Surgeon General must hold a valid, unrestricted medical professional license.

Is it too much to expect the nation's top healthcare position to be filled by an actual valid medical professional?

I agree with "less is more" in skincare, but this I agree with "less is more" in skincare, but this may be taking it too far.

Let's look at some skin pathology and learn what's really going on here.

Generational trauma… My entire grandmother’s Generational trauma…

My entire grandmother’s family was slaughtered in front of her at a young age all because they were “othered”. She was spared because she was seen as an oddity with red hair and blue eyes in a sea of more traditional Armenian traits.

Her harrowing journey to this country and the heartbreak she endured has always been in my heart and soul despite not knowing every single detail.

Her unwavering love and compassion for others despite her brutal treatment was my foundation growing up. It may be one of the reasons why I see it as my duty as a physician to fight for those who need help. My duty to fight for what is right despite the consequences.

Every day I wonder if she would be proud of me…if I live up to her standards of being a good human.

I reread her memoirs, written by my beloved late Aunt, every so often to keep me grounded and appreciative of what I have and who I fight for.
