Say goodbye to acne!

Acne is the most common skin condition in the United States today. While most people develop acne at some point in their lives, it typically clears up on its own without the need for dermatological intervention. Professional treatment can be incredibly beneficial for individuals with more severe or recurring cases of acne.

OC SkinLab is an Acne Center of Excellence and provides patients in the Southern Orange County area of California with a wide range of expert dermatological services. If you’d like more information about the acne treatments we offer to our patients or are interested in scheduling an appointment, contact us today!

What causes acne?

Acne has a number of different causes, the two most common being hormone fluctuations and the presence of certain kinds of bacteria. Typically, more than one of these causes are to blame for any given acne case, making it particularly tricky to treat.

In both cases, acne is typically the result of oil glands becoming clogged within the skin, triggering the formation of pimples, blackheads, and whiteheads. In healthy, functioning oil glands, dead skin cells rise to the surface of the skin through the pore and are expelled from the body. During the fluctuations of certain hormones, the body can begin to produce excess amounts of sebum, causing dead skin cells to stick together inside of the pore and become lodged there. P. acnes bacteria can also accumulate inside of the pore, multiplying and causing it to become inflamed.

How is acne treated?

At OC SkinLab, we understand that every case of acne is different. As such, the way we treat each instance of acne is customized to the needs of our individual patients. Typically, we begin acne treatment by experimenting with different combinations of topical creams, medicated washes, and oral medications. In order to improve the effectiveness of these treatments, we can also administer a series of DermaSweep treatments and chemical peels coupled with manual extraction.

How can I address my acne scars?

An inflamed pimple is, essentially, a wound at the surface of the skin. Like other wounds, it can lead to the development of scar tissue if left unaddressed.

Acne scars can be a painful reminder of past or present struggles with acne. For patients looking for a way to improve the appearance of these scars and obtain a smooth, even complexion, micro-needling (Dermapen) with topical growth factor is an excellent treatment option.
